Welcome to the Neighbourhood!

Community is the foundation of sustainability, health, wellness, & successful ageing.  Thus, in the spirit of these times, we accepted the challenge of designing and building our own customized neighbourhood for ourselves, our families and our friends.  We hope to be an interactive example to the world of social reclamation in which People, Technology, and Nature will be able to coexist in long term, sustainable state of dynamic equilibrium in an educated, secular neighbourhood.  We seek supporters, individuals and families who share our COMMUNITY VALUES & VISION for building our neighbourhood.  If you are interested in building, renting, designing or simply observing, please CONTACT us.

Ecovillage?

For those who are not familiar with an Ecovillage, first know what it is not: it is not shared beds, not shared kitchens, not shared finances, not organized under any common religious beliefs and it is not a "hippy commune." People often make this mistake because the word "ecovillage" evokes some ideas of communal living -- not so!

This is an intentional community -- a customized neighbourhood for social, economical and ecological sustainability -- to be legally structured as a strata (private and individually owned/rented) with the farmland owned & held in common.

Our Ecovillage community is a clean, modern, intentional community, a strata complex, where we wish to build timeless, resilient, beautiful homes in a well-planned village setting that utilizes the organic farmland for our health & food security, that utilizes forms of modern renewable energy and waste treatment technology for our energy security, self-sufficiency & comfort, and that utilizes other forms of technology to pool resources and eliminate waste, enhance leisure-time, ensure adequate private and public spaces, and establish a very high standard of living beyond what any single individual or family in the community could hope to achieve on their own.

We do not seek to develop a community that only rich people can afford to live in.  Although the members must be financially independent to participate initially: we want the richness of the community to be derived from the diversity of the individuals in the project as we work towards the common Vision. Thus, we will have individually owned homes as well as some homes for rent.

We are building this sophisticated yet comfortable Ecovillage community of 10 to 30 individual households on 30-acres of organic farmland in the beautiful temperate Okanagan Valley, British Columbia just outside the town of Lumby approximately 20 minutes drive from Vernon and 40 minutes from the Kelowna International Airport.

The property has a creek rich in trout where Coho and spring salmon run annually. The climate is mild in winters and sunny and gorgeous in the summers, allowing for fruit orchard potential. In our paradise the water in the creek is safe to swim in. We are also approximately 35km from the beautiful swimming and fishing at pristine Mabel Lake.

A look at some images of the site and ideas for the Okanagan Ecovillage

  • Commonhouse

This ia an image of the Findhorn Universal Hall which captures the imagination for design and construction of a Commonhouse.

  • Spa Facilities

We are putting a lot of time and effort into the design of a Commonhouse that meets or exceeds expectations for a home spa and gym facility. We wish to balance public space with private areas for retreat.

  • Geodesic Greenhouse

We have purchased a galvanized steel-framed 60' greenhouse for the property for creating year-round green space for plants and people.

  • Aquaponics & Permaculture

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. We will utilize aquaponics in combination with permaculture techniques in an effort to be self-sustaining.

  • Freshly grown organic food

  • Wine Cellar & Root Cellar

Imagine having access to an old world-style wine and root cellar.

  • Paraliding in Lumby

Lumby is home to the best hangliding, paragliding, motorized hang gliding, ultralight flying and sail plane flying in Canada. People flock from all over to fly here and these sports have great support at the local Raven Aviation.

  • Mabel lake & Golf course

Mabel Lake is a long, pristine, beautiful summer lake to be enjoyed in all seasons.

  • Youth, Families & Seniors

Non-stop year-round activities and adventure for all ages!

  • Swimming Pond

A Swimming Pond is like a swimming pool except the water is cleaned and filtered with natural plants by pumping the water through a marsh system. Grey water can be used in conjunction with such a system.
